Constantly regard the universe as one living being, having one substance and one soul; and observe how all things have reference to one perception, the perception of this one living being; and how all things act with one movement; and how all things are the cooperating causes of all things which exist; and consider, too, how carefully intertwined are the threads woven together to construct this fabric, how dense is this celestial weave!
Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, Meditations
For me the camera is a sketch book, an instrument of intuition and spontaneity, the master of the instant which, in visual terms, questions and decides simultaneously. In order to “give a meaning” to the world, one has to feel involved in what one frames through the viewfinder. This attitude requires concentration, discipline of mind, sensitivity, and a sense of geometry. It is by economy of means that one arrives at simplicity of expression.
I believe that, through the act of living, the discovery of oneself is made concurrently with the discovery of the world around us, which can mold us, but which can also be affected by us. A balance must be established between these two worlds – the one inside us and the one outside us. As the result of a constant reciprocal process, both these worlds come to form a single one. And it is this which we must communicate.
The essence of tragedy is not the doing of evil by evil men but the doing of evil by good men, out of weakness, indecision, sloth; inability to act in accordance with what they know to be right.
When you’re up to your neck in shit, the only thing left to do is sing.
Samuel Beckett
One thing about a pig, he thinks he’s warm if his nose is warm. I saw a bunch of pigs one time that had frozen together in a rosette, each one’s nose tucked under the rump of the one in front. We have a lot of pigs in politics. Eugene McCarthy
Seeing as it was dark I played a game of find the trousers for about ten minutes, this was a good game.
Ah, the simple joys of life.
You have to systematically create confusion, it sets creativity free. Everything that is contradictory creates life.
You know the worst thing is freedom. Freedom of any kind is the worst for creativity.
Architecture is that great living creative spirit which from generation to generation, from age to age, proceeds, persists, creates, according to the nature of man, and his circumstances as they change. That is architecture. Frank Lloyd Wright, 1937
I love Wright, and architecture too.
Heres a few quotes from Ralph Waldo Emerson. I really love his thoughts and also Thoreau’s, two prominent american transcendentalists. Amazing stuff, really.
