BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | Half of humanity set to go urban

I’m not at all sure this is a good thing.

While the world’s urban population was just one billion in 1804, by 1985 it had risen to two billion and by 2002 it was three billion. If the trend continues, the world’s urban population will double every 38 years, say researchers.

The Mike Matas Blog: A New Breed of Bicycle

Cool looking hybrid bike, for pedestrian city use. It’s not a gas electric, but a bike between the mountain and road varieties, designed to be used in the city. I love my road bike, it’s light, quick, strong, and comfortable, but it is hard to carry stuff on. I tried putting a rack and rigging a bag to the back, but I like riding just the bike – without bags or racks a lot better. And wearing a backpack keeps my shirt from breathing, leaving me to get soaked with sweat. I like how the small wheels allow a huge basket on the back, but I’m the kind of cyclist that wants speed and efficiency, those small wheels would just kill me. The rubber chain is a nice touch, but seems like it would stretch or break too easy.

    Biking

    1225 days ago

I lent my bike out for a quick ride this weekend, and it came back making this goofy noise between a click and a squeak. It bothered me the entire way to school, and just kept getting worse on the way back. I can’t figure out what it could be, but it’s right under the seat either on the pedals or front gears or shifters…

Also, people are actually starting to bike around the city! I’ve been biking here and there (mostly to school) since march, when it was cold out. Now come june, its way too hot to bike anywhere without sweating buckets – but for some reason the masses take to the saddle.

Maybe I just work to hard on my bike, but I could handle a late winter Minnesota day just fine with a polar-fleece, jeans, hat and mittens. The effort and body heat expended in biking kept my temperature right, but now there isn’t much to do to keep cool.

Wow – fractals, beautiful colors, and the simulation of a cities growth. And built with that processing thing.

Being a bike messenger looks like a sweet job.

And yes, if you have even the slightest bit of charm, you will have plenty of opportunity to pick up hot receptionists.

Biking all day would rock. Exercise and little stress is always a good combination. The pay isn’t great, but who cares that much?

Top Tech City: Minneapolis, MN - Popular Science

Minneapolis rocks. Now if we could just get some decent public transit…

More than a year ago, a crack team of editors and researchers here at Popular Science launched an exhaustive effort to find out. We input reams of data from dozens of private and government sources, tabulated our results, and came up with … Minneapolis.

“I would have guessed Silicon Valley,” he [a coffee jock] says. “But I guess I’m not that surprised. Minneapolis is a progressive place, always looking at what’s next. It’s just not in our nature to brag about it.”
