A quick and delightful fantasy, the story of Thomas Covenant. A leper in the real world, he is summoned to an alternate world by the power of a long lost staff which has been found by a servant of evil. (spoilers)
His quest is first to deliver a message from an evil lord, the master of Drool, the cavewight who stumbled upon the Staff of Law, to the Council of Lords, the committee in charge of keeping good in the land. Then he is appointed an Ur-Lord by the lords, and quests with them to save the land itself, or at least help them fight for the land.
Covenant stumbles through his dream, fighting the land, not believing his experiences are anything more then a dream. he struggles between good and evil, possible and impossible. In the land he is prophesied to be a hero of the land, and help save it from certain destruction.
He makes for an interesting dilemma, hero or villain, savior or despiser, good or evil. In the end the quest is successful (of course), and Covenant wakes up four afters after departing his own world in a hospital and is taken back to his home, isolated from civilization.
