    Moments

So the other night in a moment of its own, I was thinking how things can happen in no time and all and just get burned into memory. Sometimes things just crystalize, give a stronger feeling than most things. From the last week or two here are a few good moments:

    • Last minute game winner – We’d scored the first goal (third minute), only to be equalized sometime in the middle of the game. It was getting near the end, and there was that frantic up and down pace to the game, when our center mid hit a high shot over the goalie and right under the bar into the side netting. It was our third win in a row, and a well earned one.
    • Chris Thile on the mandolin – Overall the whole song is great, 8 guys on stage at Merlefest playing bluegrass. But the moment I’m getting at is from 2:40 to 3:10 in the video. I just keep coming back and watching it, and every time it just builds until the chords end his run so emphatically and everyone cheers and the guy is up on stage just glowing and smiling. Good stuff.
    • Cramping up – So apparently I don’t drink enough water1, two times now I’ve had cramps while playing a soccer game. The first time was maybe a month ago, and I started noticing what I thought were cramps, or involuntary spasms of my calf. I waited a bit to see if they would go away, they didn’t, so I called for a quick sub. But the second time there were about 12 minutes left, I’d played the entire game so far and we were fighting a 0-0 tie. I went up for a header, and came back down with my calf just locked, flexed as hard as it could be how it had been a few seconds ago as it pushed me into the air. My toe was pointed straight down, I couldn’t move my foot at all. I was conflicted for a few seconds until I just went down, and my calf didn’t relax for what seemed like forever. It took someone bending my foot back and forcibly relaxing the thing. I think it was the first time I’d gone down in a soccer game without being able to get right up, the trainer had to come on and everything. The calf still hurts. (The second half ended 0-0 and I went back in for two 10 minute overtime periods. And played ~80 minutes of the following day’s game.) But that was a mean 30-40 seconds when the thing was stuck, scary as heck.
    • Biking – My bike had been getting a bit out of control. Screws were loose causing parts to rattle around, the pedals creaked each time around, and something on the gears in back was squeaking. I cleaned the whole thing up, oiled it well. Nothing sounds better then the noise of a good bike whirring while you pedal.
    • Cigarettes – Generally I’m no asshole, but out and about the other night someone pulled out a cigarette. Before they could light it I’d snatched it from their fingers, thrown it onto the sidewalk, and stomped on it. I don’t remember who it was, but I’m pretty sure they were smiling (the cigarette wasn’t theirs).

1 I probably drink at least 96oz. per day. I keep a nalgene in my room and drink it’s 32oz at least twice a day, plus whatever I drink at meals or at practice or while out and about. I don’t drink coffee, pop, or any other diuretic either, so I’m thinking that it should be enough. But this is supposedly where these cramps are coming from.
