I’ve been meaning to come up with something to write along these lines for awhile now.
I’ve always loved to be called a renaissance man, probably the most appreciated comment I’ve ever received. And I think the internet really provides the best base yet for people to exist and really grow into such men.
The internet is going to be so amazingly big. If you think its ingrained into society now, just wait until it’s universal. Just wait until its developed past of its nascent www ages.
Think how long it took for cars to dominate society, to the point that they dominated the patterns of life and environment as strongly as they do now. The internet is approaching that level. And it’s not even old enough to drink yet.
With the shattering of the catholic church’s dominion over europe (the reformation), the advent of the affordable printing press/growth of access to books (back then known as the bible); the renaissance broke down european society, in an absolutely good way.
I’m hoping to see the same happen in our day and age. The internet should be able to reverse the break that occurred with the industrial revolution, one that pulled societies together, but left them structured not to benefit each other, but maximize profits for large entities that only minimally helped the individual.
In the world today, individual societies are asleep. The people within those societies lead their lives, but society itself has yet to reach any level of consciousness. The cells within the body each have an idea of what needs to be done to keep society alive. But the body has yet to reach the point of cognizance. It doesn’t yet have a coherent idea of how it’s parts work, much less how itself can best work.
The internet could pull together the disparate physiological elements of the society. Giving society itself the foresight that humans have in their ability to reflect on their condition and to improve it.
People are finding their voices. Judging by the large numbers at which they are using them, each individual nerve sending its signals back to the brain (internet) to be remembered and patterned into the future behavior of the system itself, this brain ought to really grow into something.
I don’t want to sound like I’m faking the part of luminary, and I’m sure this same thing has been said aplenty before I thought to say it today.
The internet is going to give the world back to the people. I don’t want to hammer on my human/societal evolution idea, but this is where society stops going on it’s primal instincts to hunt and self perpetuate, and moves into that of deliberate self reflection and improvement.
