I just watched Wellstone!, and you’d better go see it yourself. Wellstone died three years ago today.
These days, with fucking baboons dominating american politics, I’d sure love to see a guy like Paul show his face.
It’s not just that he was a spectacular liberal. He was. But he was more. He spoke his mind, and he spoke it fiercely. He touched countless lives. He made one hell of a difference.
One of my favorite things from the movie was a story Paul told about an abolitionist, William Lloyd Garrison. After giving a speech, a friend comes up and Garrison him why he was on fire. Garrison replies: “I’m on fire because there are mountains of ice before me, and I’m going to melt them.”
I couldn’t better describe Wellstone. I heard him speak a time or two, and he was magnificent. He cared. I can’t tell you how much that meant to me.
He cared. I really can’t tell you how much that meant to me.
